Amy's Pink Cake

I'm all for complex desserts with interesting flavor profiles and combinations, but once in awhile it's nice to go back to the simple things. Amy's Bread is a bakery here in New York that makes some incredible treats and one of my favorites is her classic pink cake. It's an old fashioned vanilla cake with a trademark vanilla pink buttercream that is so simple but SO good. I found the recipe online and woke up a few weekends ago with the sudden urge to bake something really decadent. It turned out pretty damn well if I do say so myself. I posted about the best chocolate cake in the world, well this is the best vanilla cake in the world! Decorated with sugar flowers that were sent to me in a birthday package from Miette bakery in San Francisco (thanks, Stella).

  16. As anyone with kids can tell you, food coloring can enhance your perception of taste. The bad news is that many food colorings approved by the U.S. contain toxic substance and are actually banned in other countries. The good news is that you can easily color your foods with items in your pantry. All recipes here are based on coloring about 1 cup of white cake icing. To color other items, experiment with amounts of natural dyes until you achieve the color you want. Thanks.

  17. Get a wool or silk shirt. Both of these textiles work fairly
well with food coloring. Nylon also usually works well, but it
sometimes has a synthetic coating on it that stops it from absorbing the
ink. Cotton will not hold food coloring as well. Thanks.
